Detroit-born singerĀ Sheila JordanĀ moved to New York City in 1951 and became a fixture on the jazz scene, befriending Charlie Parker and studying with the likes of Charles Mingus and Lennie Tristano. Jordan presented her inimitable vocal stylings on her 1962 debutĀ Portrait Of Sheila, one of only two vocal albums recorded for Blue Note during that era. Accompanied by a trio withĀ Barry GalbraithĀ on guitar,Ā Steve SwallowĀ on bass, andĀ Denzil BestĀ on drums, Jordan delivered delightful versions of songbook and jazz standards including swinging takes on Rodgers & Hart’s ā€œFalling In Love With Loveā€ and Irving Berlin’s ā€œLet’s Face The Music And Danceā€; expressive ballad singing on Frank Sinatra’s ā€œI’m A Fool To Want Youā€ and Tadd Dameron’s ā€œIf You Could See Me Nowā€; and a tour-de-force voice-bass duo version of Bobby Timmons’ soulful hard bop classic ā€œDat Dere.ā€

Blue Note Tone Poet Series

The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the ā€œTone Poet,ā€ on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.

Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
